However, David Bergman, director of legal and government affairs for the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, said the bill would help people with serious conditions.
'To suggest that adding new providers will change the type of service provided is misleading,' Bergman said.
Bergman said the legislation specifically adds only the types of providers who could be reimbursed through Medicare. They're already treating serious illnesses, such as depression. Under no circumstance would the bill add whole new categories of coverage under Medicare, such as marriage counseling, he said.
