News: The pitch worked. The CMA awards will take place Tuesday in New York for the first time in their history _ a move that reflects the city's heavy emphasis on luring tourism after Sept. 11.
Reidy is president of NYC Big Events, an organization created under Mayor Michael Bloomberg after the World Trade Center attack to woo large-scale events as part of his plan to turn around the city's devastated economy. Tourism generates $24 billion a year in business activity in New York, and supports the jobs of nearly 300,000 people.
The mayor credits the group, plus another called NYC & Company, with helping set a tourism record in 2004, when nearly 40 million people visited New York City, a 5 percent increase over 2003. Even more are expected this year.
