News: Limiting increases in government spending through a spending cap may sound appealing, but the concept fails to consider that government is required to fund many programs whose costs are rising faster than the rate of inflation, Soderberg said. These include Medical Assistance, which offers health care to low-income, elderly and disabled people; corrections services; utilities costs and mandated federal programs.
"Even without a spending cap, we are facing incredible challenges," said Soderberg, who is also the state's chief financial officer. "We just don't have the resources from the federal government we once had. We're forced to do more and more with state dollars."
